I like a Donna too.

We all know her weak parts, her howling and stuff, but many have said she was not able to hear herself at all.

When she is on, she was a fabulous fit for the dead in the 70's. I agree, Music Never Stopped isn't the same without her. If she was handpicked by Garcia for his JGB band, then she must have been doing something right.

Her backup vocals were almost always on point and I really dig her songs like "sunrise" and even more so "rain" off of cats under the stars. Really, "rain" is a must hear song.

Yeah,

I've always enjoyed Donna's lead and harmony vocal contributions to the Grateful Dead’s music. She also clearly helped to define the period from 1972-1978 and in my opinion was a smart replacement for Pigpens vocal, musically.

I've found myself defending the numerous assaults on her vocals here at the Forum over the last year and just don't understand why folks go so far out of their way to be so freakin critical of any of the Dead’s music performances. If you don't like something, that's fine, just let it go.

Everyone has bad days, and up until 1976, she never really had competent vocal monitors on-stage with which to hear herself.

I can clearly understand the physiological disorders that permeate from all the drug experimentation at the party, but hatred is something that the Grateful Dead were never about.

And for the record, I never skip over a 1977 Sunrise!

She was not able to hear because she was deaf from exposure to all her howling and stuff....
